CONRAD MARTENS (1801-1878)
"The Approaching Storm - 1829" Sketch for
major oil.
Image 220 x 300mm. Condition Excellent.
Born in London, Martens was the son of the Austrian
Consul. He left London in 1834 as a ship's artist
on the "Beagle" with Charles Darwin.
Arriving in Sydney in 1835 he decided to stay, opening a
studio in the Rocks. He painted many beautiful
views of Sydney Harbour and the Blue Mountains to the
west. He is represented in all major collections
in Australia.

Although this painting is unsigned it was purchased from
a group of paintings by JBC Hoyte at Lawson's Auction in
Sydney in 1989. Postcard of site attached.
Hoyte was the first president of the Art Society of
NSW. He is best known for watercolours of Sydney
Harbour and New Zealand Scenes.
