Clarke, Director of YesterGallery has been involved in the
commercial art world since 1968, when he opened his first Art
Gallery - "Gallery 98" in Burraneer Bay Road, Cronulla,
NSW Australia. At that time he was buying small paintings at the local auction
room for what was eventually to become his private collection.
"Gallery 98" became the venue for many one-person
exhibitions by students and emerging young artists.
Seven
years later, 1975, Gil and his wife Elisabeth, purchased a large
old house at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains of NSW, 96km
west of Sydney. The house and garden were dilapidated and
overgrown, but the Clarkes soon put everything back into order
and opened it to the public as their second venture called
"YesterGrange". Today they still get a mention
on www.yestergrange.com.au.

"YesterGrange"
incorporated what was eventually to become a famous tearoom. In fact,
Elisabeth's tea and scones became known as "the best in the
universe" - a quote from "Australian Women's
Weekly" in 1989.
After 24 years at "YesterGrange"
and 600,000 visitors later, Gil and Elisabeth sold up and took
their collection of old watercolours into Sydney, where they had 108
hanging in their apartment at Potts Point, and the rest in
storage. |

Becoming
restless after a trip to the U.K. to investigate the Victorian
Watercolour market, in late 2002 they moved north to sunny
Queensland, and, what did they do? You're right, they
opened a specialist gallery at Marina Mirage in Main Beach
called this time, "YesterGallery", but after four
months they decided that sitting around was not for them, so
when a friend suggested the net - here they are, somewhat older,
but much wiser, and still with the majority of their collection
... plus, all the recent oils that Elisabeth has done since about
1999, and Gil has framed, can be viewed on "Modern Oils by
Elisabeth". |
